Wheel diameter is the main label
Kids’ bikes are usually described by wheel size, not frame size. The ranges below are indicative and must be checked against the actual bicycle.
| Child height | Indicative wheels | Typical stage |
|---|---|---|
| 85–100 cm | 12″ | Balance and first pedals |
| 100–110 cm | 14″ | First pedal bike |
| 110–120 cm | 16″ | Developing control |
| 120–130 cm | 20″ | More independent riding |
| 130–145 cm | 24″ | Longer rides and gears |
| 145 cm and above | 26″ / adult XXS | Transition to adult bikes |
Three checks matter more than age
Standover
The child must be able to stand over the bike with comfortable clearance. Check the real top-tube shape, not only the wheel label.
Minimum saddle height
A beginner needs easy stability when stopping. More experienced riders can use a higher efficient pedalling position.
Brakes and controls
Small hands must reach and operate the levers without stretching. Gears should be simple enough to use while riding.
Weight also matters
A lighter bike is easier for a child to lift, steer and recover. Compare complete-bike weight, not just frame material.
Before buying
- Measure current height and inseam.
- Check standover and minimum saddle height.
- Test both brake levers.
- Watch the child start, stop and turn.
- Choose present control over distant growth.
